STSM Report: Julia Nihtilä

I am Julia Nihtilä, a PhD student in the transplantation genomics group lead by Professor Jukka Partanen at the Finnish Red Cross Bloodservice.

I had the pleasure to visit the laboratory of Professor Katarzyna Bogunia Kubik at the Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy in Wroclaw, Poland in October 2022.

My STSM was titled “Genetic association between NK cell receptor gene polymorphisms and cGVHD and relapse”, and it belongs to the action working group 2, Biomarkers of chronic GvHD.

The transplantation genomics group had started to collaborate with Professor Bogunia Kubik and her team before this STSM, so the main goal of my visit was to drive this collaboration further by working on a joint project for my PhD. This included acquiring clinical and laboratory information on Polish HSCT samples which are currently in genotyping in Helsinki, Finland. Obtaining this information is vital for utilizing the genotypes further, in this project the NK cell receptor polymorphisms, in statistical analyses. We also discussed the analysis steps conducted so far in both Wroclaw and Helsinki, which led to suggestions on how to improve the analysis and trying to implement these changes in the current workflow.

All methods used in the project were also gathered up for an initial outline for a manuscript on this project, and I got to familiarize myself with the sample collection, DNA extraction, and genotyping protocols used in Professor Bogunia Kubik’s laboratory.
