An overview of the Short Term Scientific Mission 'Extracellular Vesicle Characterisation via Flow Cytometry' undertaken by Kimberly Schell, a PhD student from the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. Kimberly was hosted by Professor Marit Inngjerdingen of the Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo, Norway.
I spent 2 weeks on a short term scientific mission aligned with Action Working Group 2, Biomarkers, and focused on characterising extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cGvHD.
The aim was to establish and optimise a protocol to stain the EVs for enriched markers, which are used to determine whether a subcellular size particle is an EV, using Flow Cytometry. As such, I used platelet poor plasma (PPP) and EVs isolated from plasma to stain for CD9, CD63, CD81. Using this technique and the accompanying analysis successfully, will enable me to perform this characterisation on my own research samples back in Newcastle.
Getting to spend time in Norway at my host lab was a lovely experience, scientifically as well as socially. Through this STSM our labs are able to maintain a strong collaborative network, which we are keen to continue after the Action ends to share knowledge and expertise to gain a greater understanding of EVs and how we can use them to help patients.
